Medical Board of California Gives Update on Effort to Get a PHP for California
At the Riverside County Medical Association’s 37th Annual Conference on Physicians’ Wellbeing, on Friday, July 18th, Reji Varghese, Executive Director of the Medical Board of California, will give an update on AB408, the pending legislation that authorizes the Medical Board to create a program based on the years of experience of physician health programs in other states and on the Guidelines from the Federation of State Physician Health Programs.
There is a legislative staff analysis of AB408 prepared for the Assembly. A copy is attached HERE. You can track the progress of the bill HERE as it moves through the legislature.
The history and description of the steps in past efforts to get a PHP is available HERE on the CPPPH website.
Federation of State Medical Boards
For the last ten years, the annual meetings of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) have been held in the same city on the same dates, and there has been an annual joint meeting of the two audiences. This year, the joint meeting was April 26 in Seattle. The title of the session was “Confidentiality, Safety, Collaboration, and Care: A Physician’s Journey” described as an in-depth exploration of Model Physician Health Programs (PHPs).
The physician who spoke about his journey is the current president of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, Stephen D. Loyd, MD. A video of the 90-minute session is available HERE to those who sign in for a free account. Other speakers were Katie L. Templeton, JD, Chair, Federation of State Medical Boards and Michael J. Baron, MD, MPH, President, Federation of State Physician Heath Programs.
Several presentations from FSMB’s 2025 Annual Meeting (and past meetings also) are available as on-demand activities from the FSMB website where you will be required to create a free account to see the videos.
