Two Conferences Worth Special Notice:
June 19 RCMA and April 29/May 2 FSPHP

RCMA Annual Conference June 19
Riverside County Medical Association’s 38th Annual Virtual Conference on Physicians’ Well-Being is on Friday, June 19th. In this year’s always timely conference, topics include “The Aging Physician” and “Disruptive Behavior without a Diagnosis” as well as a review and update of legal issues, and a presentation by Reji Varghese, Executive Director of the Medical Board of California. Full information about this 4.5 hour Zoom session is HERE. Registration is HERE.

FSPHP 2026 Meeting April 29 – May 2
Several Californians will be registrants in Baltimore for the Federation of State Physician Health Programs 2026 Annual Conference — April 29 – May 2. The program includes over 14 different sessions that cover the wide range of PHP experience.
Several topics will be pertinent for Californians who work without a PHP and who rely on medical staff/medical group roles and actions. Examples include:

Disruptive Behavior in Physicians: More Than Meets the Eye
Disruptive behavior in medical settings, bullying, humiliation, discriminatory comments, physical aggression, and other actions, contribute to medical errors, reduced patient and team satisfaction, high turnover, and staffing shortages. The session describes prevalence, causal factors, and impact on the health care system.

Contemporary Approaches to Physician Mental Health Assessment and Monitoring
This session will examine advances in diagnostic assessment tools, and current debates regarding the ethics and utility of fitness-for-duty evaluations.

Barriers for Referral to a Physician Health Program
This session identifies specific challenges that prevent physicians from seeking help including the widespread lack of awareness of services, insufficient training on how to approach and support a distressed peer, as well as the pervasive fear of the unknown rooted in concerns over confidentiality and career repercussions.

All topics, speakers and session details are HERE. The link to registration is HERE.

The Californians in attendance will meet together as a group a few times during the conference to share notes and identify what will be most valuable to them in their work back home as California awaits the creation of a Physician Health Program. Watch future CPPPH newsletters for their comments and their “take aways.”

If you plan to attend and want to join the meetups of the Californians, let CPPPH know with an email to gjara@cppph.org. You will be added to the group text created for this event.

Getting a Physician Health Program for California

Each issue of this newsletter reports the status of AB408 so that readers can follow its progress through the legislature in Sacramento. At the beginning of April, the bill is awaiting a hearing date with the Senate Committee on Judiciary. When the date is set, we’ll send another newsletter as well as notifying members of the CPPPH Work Group to Get a PHP for California, the group established by CPPPH for the purpose of sharing updated information with interested parties about the legislative effort underway now by the Medical Board of California.
